President & Chief Executive Officer Paul Sobey is the President and CEO of Empire Company Limited. Mr. Sobey is a director of the Bank of Nova Scotia, a trustee of Crombie REIT and a director of Sobeys Inc.
Mr. Sobey joined Empire Company Limited in 1982 and worked through various positions in Empire and its subsidiaries before attaining his present position. He became Vice-President & Secretary of Empire in 1985. In 1986 he became President & CEO of Empire’s real estate subsidiary, Sobey Leased Properties Limited; in 1988 Chairman of Lawton’s Drug Stores Limited; in 1989 President & CEO of Atlantic Shopping Centres Limited; and President & CEO of Empire Company Limited in 1998. Prior to joining Empire, Mr. Sobey worked as a Chartered Accountant with Grant Thornton in Toronto for four years.
Mr. Sobey graduated from Dalhousie University, with his Bachelor of Commerce in 1978; obtained his Chartered Accountant designation in 1982; and in 1996, completed an Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. Mr. Sobey was awarded the F.C.A. designation in 2006 and in 2011, Mr. Sobey obtained an Honorary Doctorate of Commerce from Saint Mary's University.
